I was just searching for some information about neoliberalism nowadays. They advised me to look through this book. So, I discovered "Armies and Politics" in our library. And, you know I found even much more than I expected to. There are a lot of new points of view. The subject of interaction between politics and armies is coming out to light from unexpectedly foreshortenings. It was a very fascinating and cognitive reading for me. I am strong ordering you to acquaint with articles in this book such as Globalization and Neoliberalism by David M.Kotz, Rethinking the Brazilian Armed Forces: No Role in Sight, What Function Than? by Rene Armand Dreifuss, The Experience of Military Regimes and Present Day Russia by Evgeny Pashentsev and The Latin American Armed Forces and the Struggle Against Drug Traffic: The Case of Brazil by Luis Alexandre Fuccille. Have a nice reading!

In May 25, 1974 the Portugal army organized military coup, led by some left-radical young generals. The long-lived conservative dictatorship of Salazar-Caetano was put down. The Portugal militaries announced the slogans for liberty, national self-determination and social equality. They radically changed the stream of the social-political development of their country. After 28 years Portugal is being a democratic state, member of NATO and EU. The same military revolution in Portugal, with other military progressive, left-authoritarian regimes in the countries, where they occurred, are investigated and analyzed by Prof. Dr. Evgeny N. Pashentsev in his study: The EXPERIENCE OF Military Regimes and Present day Russia, published in Armies and Politics, edited by himself and by assistant-professor Constantine V.Miniar-Belorouchev. In his study Evgeny N. Pashentsev is analizing the relations between the army and the society in post-soviet Russia from the point of view of the experience of Portugal and some Latin American and African left military revolutions. He is analyzing the events in Moscow during August, 1991 and October, 1993.

The book contains the other two articles dedicated to the Russian army and policy: The Growth of Clericalism in the Russian Army: Dangerous Tendencies by Sergey Mozgovoy, and Russia and China: Partners for Peace, Stability and Development by Mikhail Titarenko, where are announced some unknown facts and tendencies in the Russian military and foreign policy.

The majority of the studies /15 from 21/ are dedicated to Latin America, because they are delivered in front of the Congress of the Latinoamericanists in June 2001, Moscow, at the section International Relations and Armies in Latin America. Three from them are dedicated to Argentina, two to Brazil. Mexico and Venezuela, and one to Cuba. The other six articles are analyzing processes and perspectives, for Latin America as a whole.

Especially interesting are the three articles for Argentina: The Organization of American States, the United States of America and the Argentine Republic, Facing the Institutional Crisis in Santo Domingo, 1964-1965 by Nidia Elsa Gale; The Argentine Foreign Policy During the Crumbling Democracy of the Sixties and the Presence of the Military Sectors as a Power Factor, 1958-1966 by Maria de Monserrat Llaro and Raimundo Siepe; Argentina, World War ll and the Entry Nazi War Criminals by Raanan Rein. In the three studies is analyzed and presented the traditional decisive role of the Argentine militaries in the interior and exterior policy of their country, and especially the attempts of the Argentine generals to oppose American and British hegemony and paternality on the territory of Latin America. During the three studies is passing the shadow of the famous Argentine general and statesman of XX Century - Juan Domingo Peron, converted in symbol of his country, and of the dream of the Argentineans to political independence and economic prosperity.

The book is really interesting. Different points of view, many unknown historical facts and a rich bibliography, especially in the articles written by Raanan Rein, Hector Luis Saint-Pierre and Daniel Zirker, Orlando J. Perez, Klaus Bodemer...
